Smoke detectors are your home’s first line of defense against house fires. Yes, they can be annoying if they go off accidentally when you’re cooking dinner, but they can also save your life if there’s a fire in the middle of the night.
They’re required by law to be in every home, but how many do you really need? Let’s take a look so you can keep your home and your family safe.
How Many Smoke Detectors Do I Need?
As a rule, you should have at least one smoke detector for the following locations in your home:
- Inside and every bedroom
- In hallways outside bedroom doors
- Inside common areas such as your living room and dining room
- Near stairways for every floor of your house
- Your kitchen
- Your basement
- Your laundry room
- In your furnace room (if you have one)
The number of smoke detectors will depend on the size and layout of your home. A single-floor house with only a couple of bedrooms will obviously require fewer smoke detectors than a house with three floors and four bedrooms. At the very least, you should have one smoke detector for every floor and every bedroom of your house.
Where Should I Place My Smoke Detectors?
Placement of smoke detectors is also important. Smoke rises, so smoke detectors should be installed either on your ceiling or on a wall no more than 12 inches from the ceiling. If you install a smoke detector in your kitchen (and you should), keep it at least 10 feet away from your stove, oven, and other cooking appliances to prevent false alarms. Keep them at least 12 inches away from fluorescent lights for the same reason.
Testing and Maintaining Your Smoke Detectors
You should test your smoke detectors at least once a month. For most smoke detectors, all you need to do is press the “Test” button. This should set off the alarm, so be prepared for a very loud noise from right in front of you.
If you have battery-operated smoke detectors, check the owner’s manual to know how often the batteries need to be changed, and pay attention to the types of batteries used since some last longer than others.
Most smoke detectors make loud “chirping” noises when their batteries are about to die. Smoke detectors also should be replaced after 10 years even if they seem to be working properly.
